Route 299
Ulster County
is developing a list of priority projects
for non-motorized transportation. We believe
Route 299 west of New Paltz should be
included on the priority list. Here's why:
Route 299
leads directly from the busy Village of New
Paltz to the popular cycling trails of the
Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park.
It's an important transportation link,
providing access to the Ulster County
Fairgrounds, residential areas west of the
Wallkill River, businesses at the foot of
the Shawangunks, and connections to
Ellenville and the Rondout Valley. But it
has no shoulder, and
has become a high-speed, high traffic road
that is hazardous for cyclists and
pedestrians. Bypassing the road involves an
impractical and lengthy detour. It's time
for an upgrade.

A show of
positive support for improving the roadway
is critical. Whether you are a resident or
an occasional visitor, if you are a cyclist
or pedestrian who uses Route 299, or
would use it with improved shoulders, make your feelings known. Ulster
County has an
interest in improving conditions for all
users and will be glad to learn of your
concern.
